Energy storage going global in 2026: Chinese manufacturers’ “price war” is ruining the market

In the past two years, the most popular topic in the overseas home energy storage market has been "China's production capacity explosion". From 5kWh wall-mounted to 64kWh stack, from 6kW mixed grid inverter to 16kW inverter control all-in-one machine, almost every Chinese manufacturer says that it "can do the whole series." But the facts in 2026 are: It is becoming more and more difficult for overseas channel vendors to make money, the repurchase rate of end users is getting lower and lower, and the entire value chain is being involved in a price war in which no one wins.

This article is not to complain, but to put the problem on the table so that we can see it clearly before deciding how to proceed.

Three "chaos" witnessed by front-line channels

We have long been in contact with channel partners in Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. From the second half of 2025 to the first half of 2026, the most common feedback we will hear is three types of issues:

1. The price of the same battery can differ by 40%, and channel dealers simply do not dare to stock it.

A 5kWh wall-mounted battery, FOB quotations range from USD 480 to USD 780, and the specifications look similar. The channel dealer bought a bargain, only to find at the terminal that the internal resistance was high and the BMS had insufficient heat dissipation. After half a year, the attenuation curve collapsed, and the repair order ate up all the profits.

2. CE Documents are flying everywhere, which one is the real one?

There are many factories that do not have a IEC CEll level report for 62619 and no EMC test records, but just put a CE mark and ship the products. In countries with weak market supervision, local distributors will not check the authenticity of documents; when batch repairs and returns are made, it is discovered that "CE" is just a printed pattern.

3. It is only a matter of time before Chinese traders without local performance capabilities are bypassed.

A Nigerian channel dealer said: "It's not the key to whose goods I buy. The key is that something went wrong. Pay today, replace the main control board tomorrow, and whose engineers can come to the site." After the goods shipped directly from China fail, the channel dealer either bears the loss of reputation or loses money and reships. After a few times, the brand is bypassed.

These three issues are business phenomena when viewed individually. When viewed together, they are the complete script of "bad money drives out good money". Chinese manufacturers that are serious about products, compliance, and services are paying for the impact of low prices.

Why has the price war reached this point?

There is really excess production capacity. The fall in lithium prices, the expansion of battery cell production capacity, and the short-term boom in energy storage demand have attracted a large number of "OEMs" and "traders" to enter the market. They have no factory, no BMS algorithm, no aging test line, only low-price battery procurement channels and familiar customs declaration routes. The result is: a battery with a cell cost of USD 95 / kWh, coupled with a poorly made BMS, can be sold for USD 130.

The demand side is seriously misaligned. Overseas buyers have become desensitized to batteries with "beautiful parameters", and more and more people want "people who can find them if something goes wrong, who can come up with a 5-year warranty, and who can tell me which company the battery cells are from." This demand is precisely that OEMs without R&D capabilities cannot fill .

What kind of partners are channel providers really choosing?

After talking to hundreds of channel consultants, you will find that their selection criteria have changed significantly in the past 18 months. The "purchasing list" they get now basically consists of these four items:

Evaluation itemsActual expectations of first-line channel merchants
Cell sourceWilling to disclose Product A/B, whether it is prismatic square, whether the cycle life curve has third-party testing
BMS Independent capabilities Can the factory change the firmware, and whether it supports CAN / RS485 Handshake with Mainstream Inverters
Certification Integrity CE File + UN38.3 + IEC 62619 CEll Report, three pieces are available
Local fulfillment There is a local warehouse/service station/remote diagnosis APP, which can be used in 48 Response within hours

Chinese manufacturers that can stably meet these four requirements account for no more than 20% of the entire supply ecosystem. The remaining 80% are in a price war, and many of them will be eliminated by 2026–2027.

💡 The purchasing list of channel suppliers has changed: battery cell source is transparent, BMS independent and controllable, complete certification, local fulfillment - less than 20% of Chinese manufacturers meet all four, which is the real watershed in the price war.

Three ways out for "being solid", how do we go about it

蝉鸣 (Chanming Energy) positions itself as a "solid Chinese manufacturer." We cannot control market sentiment, but we can control our own products and services. There are three specific methods:

1. Real parameters, real cycle.

We publicly bid "8000+ cycle @80% DoD" because our battery cell factory promised this number and attached a third-party sampling test report. We do not write "12,000 cycle" or "100,000 hours of life" - these numbers look good in the short term on the specification sheet, but in the long term they are a trap for channel dealers.

2. Compliance is complete and documents are authentic.

Each factory battery is equipped with:

  • CE Technical document + DoC (Declaration of Conformity)
  • UN38.3 Test summary (provided according to configuration)
  • Contemporaneous configuration IEC 62619 CE Level ll test report
  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)

UL 1973 / UL 9540 We are working on it, and we will not write "certified" until it is completed. This is responsible for our channel partners and our own brand.

3. Localized cooperation, not local warehouse.

We encourage channel dealers to do "local assembly + local after-sales" instead of simply stocking up on goods. We offer:

  • Remote diagnosis APP (allowing field engineers to see BMS alarms, temperature curves, and cycle times at a glance)
  • Spare parts support (consumable parts such as main control boards, relays, displays, etc. can be sent individually)
  • Training videos and documents (English + Local language)

When a batch problem occurs, the channel dealer will get the spare parts and the replacement can be completed within 48 hours. This is the fulcrum of long-term cooperation.

From production capacity involution to value competition, product strength is the bottom line

Written at the end

One sentence review: The price war will eventually end, and the value war will begin - Only by making parameters solid, complying with regulations, and providing long-term services can Chinese energy storage manufacturers survive.

The dividend period for energy storage overseas is ending. The next stage is the process of "good money driving out bad money" - the Chinese manufacturers that can survive must be those that have solid parameters, complete compliance, and long-term services .

We are betting on this road, and we hope to bet on it with our channel partners. If you are choosing a long-term partner for a certain market, please contact us to discuss the details.

Conclusion

The price war will eventually end, but the value war has just begun. Chinese energy storage manufacturers that are solid will win their own place in this adjustment. If you are also looking for a supplier who is "willing to survive with customers", welcome to chat.
